  1. Another top-notch ‘cast. Is there any way I can force the rest of my gaming group to listen to your entire back catalog? 🙂

    I’m fortunate enough to game with people who are good at dialog, but a few of the issues you mentioned still arise: the tendency of GMs to shut down scenes that “aren’t going anywhere”; the (passive-aggressive) tactic of working meta-criticism into in-character interaction; etc. This episode made me think about those things, and I’ll be more aware of when they’re happening in the future.

    It occurred to me as I ran a game last night that something that helps me with the whole “GM patience” while people are talking thing is that you don’t have to totally duck out or shut up.

    Last night there were two people at the table, both of whom are newish role players and neither of whom are super dialogue-ish, but EVERYONE at the table wanted to see them role play out a conversation they were having for very good reasons. They were really having trouble getting into it at frist, and I realized that I was getting impatient as the GM. I also realized, though, that I hadn’t done a lot to set the scene, so rather than push them or cut the scene, I stepped in and kind of said “okay, you’re friends have all left, it’s about an hour later. Maybe you’re cleaning up the place a bit? Does that sound right?” They said it did, so I continued to kind of set the scene until it gave them an in to start saying “ah ha” and step in with what their character would say.

    It kind of helped me feel like I was greasing the wheels a bit, and alleviated some of my impatience, as well as putting them in a good place to get their dialogue on.
