Episode 117: Flashbacks (Narrative Techniques)

Hosts: Timo, Todd, Megan, Scott

Main topic: Flashback (Narrative Techniques) (24:10)
We’re starting a new series exploring how narrative techniques used in different forms of media apply to gaming: The good, the bad, the ugly, and the stir-fried. We set it off by talking about a thing that we used during our Apocalypse World actual play: flashbacks. We talk about how they have worked for our games, and

what we like and dislike about it.

rants (01:07:20)
Todd: Don’t complain about spoilers
Megan: The internet in China sucks. I lost 10 lbs eating chinese food!
Scott: Job wise 2012 has started out pretty bad.
Timo: Games don’t have to be linear no more.

  1. Twenty seconds in, and “Jenny WOOOO!” has me laughing helplessly, albeit as quietly as possible since I’m at work. I blame the shock of returning to the grind.

  2. Leverage has a cool flashback mechanic. It has two types of flashbacks, establishment flashbacks and wrap-up flashbacks. These are mechanics ingrained into the game.
